Predictions for the 2019-20 season
The Bruins are still at the top with the Lightning falling a little behind. The Flyers have been playing very well and are climbing in the standings. In the West, the Avalanche is still on top but the Blues are making a strong push.

The predictions and rankings from my model have been a bit jumpy up to now with teams moving up or down significantly from one week to the next. This is because I chose a weighting function that gives increasing values to the most recent games. Going forward, the weights will stabalize and we will see more stability in the predictions and rankings. To learn about my model, check this post.

Predictions for the 2019-20 season
The Lightnings are at the top. The top teams are in the East. In the West, the Avalanche is standing out. After a bad week, Montreal’s probability of making the playoffs keeps on improving and is down 3.6%.

Predictions for the 2019-20 season
The Bruins climbed to the top but the Lightnings are not far behind. The Blues have been struggling of late and have dropped and their probability of winning the cup is down to 1.

Predictions for the 2019-20 season
Eastern teams are at the top. Montreal has been playing better but even though its expected number of points is 90.6, its probability of making the playoffs is only 8.2%. Comparatively, Chicago, who plays in the western conference, is expected to get 89.

Predictions for the 2019-20 season
The Blues are still at the top. The Maple Leafs have significantly improved their position during the last week. The Canadiens are on the decline and have only a 5.5% probability of making the playoffs.

NHL predictions and rankings - December 31, 2019
The outcome of a hockey game, or any other team sport, depends on the relative strengths of the two teams and random events (luck). Observed outcomes inform about teams’ strengths which can be summarized in a statistical model.
I estimated a model of the NHL 2019-20 season with the objective of predicting standings at the end of season and the winner of the Stanley Cup, and rank teams by strength (power ranking).
