I was out yesterday so this is coming a day late. A lot of trades last week and it will be interesting to see how this impacts the rest of the season.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
Once again, the Panthers and the Avalanche are at the top of the expected standings, practically with the same number of expected points. The Flames are still favorite to win the Cup but the Avalanche is not too far behind.

The trades are almost done. Some could have a significant impact. My model won’t be able to capture their effect right away but hopefully well enough before the start of the playoffs.

The Oilers have improved their odds of making the playoffs.

Only 8 days left before the trade deadline. I’m looking forward to see if there will be any big move, and to stop reading about possible trades.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
Things have changed quite a bit over the last week. The Avalanche is not doing too well. The Panthers are at the top of the expected standings and the Flames are favorite to win the Cup.
Last week, it looked pretty much set which team will make the playoffs but the Golden Knights have been playing poorly and are now in danger of not making the playoffs.

The trade deadline is approaching. It seems that half hockey news coverage is devoted to possible trades. I’m looking forward this to be over.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
The Avalanche is still the favorite to win the President’s trophy, with the same expected number of points as the Panthers. The Flames, who just beat the Avalanche in overtime, are favorite to win the Stanley Cup.
According to the predictions below, it’s pretty much a done deal who the 16 teams making the playoffs will be.
NHL predictions and rankings - February 27, 2022
It was a strange week. The top team from last week lost three games in a row and the last place team has now won five games in a row.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
Surprise, the Panthers lost three in a row and have dropped off first place. The Avalanche keep on winning and is back as the favorite to win the President’s trophy. The Flames are favorite to win the Stanley Cup.
NHL predictions and rankings - February 20, 2022
I was very happy to see the Women Canadian hockey team win Olympic gold. Even more so because Marie-Philip Poulin, the team captain and hockey’s clutchiest player, and I both grew up in Beauceville.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
The Panthers jumped to first place after consecutively beating the Hurricanes and the Wild. Their schedule has been pretty tough lately but they keep on winning, exceeding expectations. The Avalanche is second with about the same number of expected points as last week.
NHL predictions and rankings - February 13, 2022
It’s sad not to see NHL players at the Olympics. It was the best thing about the winter Olympics between 1998 and 2014. Hopefully, we’ll see the NHL back in 2026.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
The Avalanche is on top, not too surprisingly. The Maple Leafs have dropped to the fourth spot. The Flames have the best odds of winning the Cup after playing very well lately.

Losing to the Coyotes and a 5-game winning streak by the Maple Leafs, was enough to drop the Avalanche from the top spot and for the Maple Leafs to claim it.
NHL predictions and rankings - January 30, 2022
Things have settled and we have a better idea of who the better teams are. We also know that the Canadiens are at the bottom, and likely will stay there. It will be interesting to see what trades the top and bottom teams will make.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
The Avalanche has been crushing it lately. They are at the top of the predicted standings and by quite a margin.
NHL predictions and rankings - January 23, 2022
All teams have resumed their schedule. A few teams have a 43 games played. The Senators have only 34 and will have a difficult end of the season.
Predictions for the 2021-22 season
The Avalanche climbed to the top and has the highest odds of winning the Cup. I’m a bit puzzled why the Maple Leafs are that high up. They’ve been playing well but looking at their record its a bit hard to imagine them with the second highest probability of winning the Cup.
